Shady Cove School families,

Our staff is anxious to welcome back our students and families for the 2020-2021 school year!  We hope you enjoyed your Summer and were able to spend time with family and friends. It continues to be a privilege and honor to serve as the principal of such an exemplary and student-centered learning community.

I am sure many of you have had multiple opportunities to think about, hear about, and discuss what this school year may or may not look like. I saw someone share a thought on social media recently that I would like to share with all of you, “Let’s give this school year the opportunity to be awesome. Don’t throw a label or judgment on it before it begins. It may just surprise us in big, beautiful ways.”  While there are still so many moving and changing parts, I am certain of one thing - together we will accomplish great things!

As we plan for a start of the school year that none of us have experienced before, we will be focused on ensuring:

● every student, every day is finding a way to feel connected,

● every student, every day is being challenged by new learnings and experiences,

● and every student every day knows they have a caring adult they can turn to.

As you are aware, per our Governor's mandate, we will begin our school year doing with Comprehensive Distance Learning until we are able to meet the COVID-19 metrics for Jackson County.  Students will begin school virtually on September 14th. Next week, after our teachers return, we will send out our draft student schedules. Expect to see these on Wednesday, September 2.

Establishing routines and schedules for your student will ensure their overall success. Your child’s teacher will be reaching out to you the week of September 8th to introduce themselves, inform families how the student will connect on September 14, the first day of school and set up a conference for the following week. This may be virtual or in person. We understand that every family will have unique scheduling needs due to parent work hours, etc. However, we will be establishing a consistent schedule to help support our students. Students will be required to be engaged in learning both online with their teacher as well as applying that learning through practice each day of the week. Teachers will be recording their online learning sessions to allow for students to view these at times that work best for their family. However, the more often students can interact in the live sessions with their classmates and teachers, the better connected they will feel. Please work with your child’s teacher if something is not working.

If you haven’t done so already, please log into your ParentVue account and register your child/children. This process mainly requires updating your information.

It is also that time of year that we offer iPad insurance. We highly recommend this insurance. If you had insurance for the 2019-20 school year it is still effective until September 14, 2020. During the 2020-2021 school year, EPSD9 will continue to offer optional iPad insurance to students and families. The annual insurance will be effective from August 11, 2020-September 7, 2021. The cost for the insurance is $25.00. Without insurance, students will be responsible for all repair or replacement costs. If your student did not have iPad insurance for the 2019-20 school year, students will need to bring their iPad to the office to verify the condition of the iPad prior to acceptance of your insurance payment. Please click on this link for more information on iPad Insurance.

We are so fortunate to have such an amazing PTO that supports our families, students and teachers! For additional support you are welcome to email them at and like them on Facebook by searching for @ShadyCovePTO.

We encourage you to check our school webpage, Facebook and your email to stay informed about event dates and times.

Our Shady Cove staff and I feel privileged to be a part of our Shady Cove School families and community. We are energized and committed to making this a fantastic school year. We look forward to a unique but amazing year with our students and families. Enjoy the remainder of your Summer!
